What Is Javanese Weton?

Weton is the pairing of a day and a pasaran that falls on a person's birth date in the Javanese calendar. There are seven days and five pasaran, so 35 combinations arise, and all of them have been used across Java. Pasaran cycle every five days: Legi, Paing, Pon, Wage, then Kliwon, then back again to Legi. So a weton shifts one step every five days; it is never chosen by hand.

Because the arithmetic is fixed, anyone's weton can be recalculated from their birth date at any time, by anyone. Nothing has to be stored or asked of anyone else. That is why a weton can be written on a household calendar, printed out, and searched for online, just as the weton pages on this site do.

Where Do the Neptu Numbers Come From?

Two neptu values were fixed long ago for every day and every pasaran. Add them together and you get the weton number used by Javanese weton calculators everywhere. For example, Monday is worth 8 and the pasaran Wage is worth 4, so the weton Senin Wage is worth 12.

That total is then divided by 4, 5, 7, and 8. Each division is read in a different way. Division by 4 yields the Ratu and Sri elements. Division by 5 yields the five cycle elements used to read character. Divisions 7 and 8 are used for more specific questions, such as partner compatibility and good times to start a business. The calculator above works everything out at once, and the numbers can be rechecked one by one on each weton page.

Weton Is Not a Prophecy

It should be said plainly: weton cannot predict the future. What you find here is the old Javanese way of arranging time — when it is best to begin something, when it is best to wait, and how to describe someone's character without giving offense. Read the results as rules written down by ancestors, not as guesses about what is coming.
